You buy a gaming monitor that supports 144hz, but when setting it up, you cannot find 144hz when selecting the refresh rate. That’s very frustrating right. In fact, you may even be suspecting you bought the wrong monitor or the monitor was wrongly advertised.
This is a common question among our readers. Luckily, you don’t have worry, it’s something you can fix in just a few settings. Provided you are sure the monitor suppports 144 Hertz. Sometimes you may have to change a few components but from my experieces only a few tweaks and you now have 144hz instead of 60 Hertz. Here are a few solutions to a monitor not running at 144hz.
How do i change from 60hz to 144hz refresh rate
1. Navigate to your Monitors Settings and select 144 Hertz
For most people this is where the problem lies. This is assuming your monitor supports 144hz, you have right cable for connection and your settings are set okay. If this won’t work, most likely the problem is with your cables.
This is how you change from 60hz to 144hz in your monitors settings if you are a windows 10 user.
Setting > System > Display > Advanced Display Settings > Display Adapter Properties
In the Advanced Display Properties click the second monitor to click “Monitor Refresh Rate” then select your monitors advertised refresh which is in this case 144hz.

For Windows 7 and 8 – how do i set my monitor to 144hz
On Windows 7 or 8,
- Right-click the desktop and select “Screen Resolution”.
- Select your monitor
- Click the “Advanced Settings” link.
- Click the “Monitor” tab and finally
- Choose the refresh rate from the “Screen Refresh Rate” box
2. Check NVIDIA Control Panel and change 60hz to 144hz
Another way to fix to your 144hz monitor which is only showing 60hz is using the NVIDIA Control Panel and select 144hz.
If you cannot find your desired refresh rate in these 2 settings the next thing to check are your cables. I have noted many people have a problem with this.
3. Check if you have the right cables and if you are connecting them the right way
There maybe two things here, either you don’t have the right cable or you are not connecting the right way.
The main thing to understand here is –“To output 1080p content at 144 Hertz, you need either a dual-link DVI, or DisplayPort.
For displayport ensure you have either DisplayPort 1.2, 1.3 or 1.4 but not 1.1. So if you have an old DisplayPort cable it may not support 144hz. Its not just about version, also ensure you have a certified cable but not those imititations.
Don’t use a HDMI cable. While a HDMI 1.4 may work some monitors will only out 60hz or 144hz even with HMDI 1.4.
But if you must use a HDMI cable use at least 1.4 for 144hz and HDMI 2.0 for 240hz

4. Consider overclocking
There are some monitors that allow you to overclock the refresh rate easily. While its easy, there are risks associated with it. But there are some monitors that manufacturers indicate you can overclock. For instance the Dell’s S2419HGF gaming monitor features 120Hz refresh rate that easily overclocks to 144Hz. So if you have a monitor like this and cannot see the option to change to 144hz refresh rate consider over clocking.
5. Update your computer drivers
If you haven’t resolved the issue of how to change monitor to 144hz with the above troubleshooting options, maybe the issue is with your drivers. Here i recommend updating your NVIDIA or AMD’s graphics card drivers. Caution; download these drivers from NVIDIA or AMD website or you risk infecting your gaming rig with viruses and malware making your issues even worse.
6. Check your graphics cards
While this is rare with those who understand computer components as a beginner you maybe using a graphics card that cannot support 144hz.
7. Choose your monitors native resolution
I also suggest selecting your monitors native resolution and see if you will be able to select 144hz refresh rate from your monitor. The reason you not be seeing the 144hz refresh maybe because your monitor is running at a lower resolution that its native resolution.
